Jeep Wrangler windshields

The Jeep Wrangler windshield is one of the most searched pieces of glass on the internet for auto glass replacements. Unfortunately, this windshield is flat and sits almost vertical, making it more likely to be chipped by rocks than other vehicles on the road. Replacing the windshield due to a crack or chip can be very frustrating. Later in this article, I’ll provide some possible solutions to prevent rock chips and help you save money.

Do the windshields fold down?

No, the Jeep Wrangler windshield does not fold down. The only Jeeps that had a folding front windshield were the old CJ Jeeps. However, those made in 1987 came with a “sun-rider” option that allowed the windshield to be lifted and removed. Unfortunately, none of those options are available on the newer models.

Do the windshields crack easily?

Yes, the Jeep Wrangler windshield does crack more quickly than other vehicles due mainly to its position. Most car windshields are angled and deflect rocks as they hit the glass. However, the windshield on a Jeep is almost vertical, which causes it to absorb more of the impact when a stone hits it. For this reason, a typical rock chip may require a replacement on a Jeep.

How can I prevent chips or cracks?

The windshield on a Jeep has a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) sandwiched between two layers of glass; it’s still not guaranteed to withstand the impact of a rock and stop chips. However, there are a couple of ways to help prevent chips and cracks from happening.

Are there particular ways to clean the glass?

Yes, start by saturating the glass with water or ammonia-free glass cleaner before wiping it with a cloth. This process will help loosen the dust, small rocks, and other hidden contaminants, making it easier to clean and preventing accidental scratches. Ammonia-free cleaners will also help to avoid issues with tinted windows fading or bubbling over time.

Can the windshield wipers cause damage?

Yes, you may experience problems with the wipers because they constantly collect contaminants that can cause wear and tear on the rubber and potentially scratch the glass when you turn on the wipers. Cleaning the wiper blades more consistently can help stop accidental scratches in the windshield. Scratches also tend to happen if the rubber part of the wiper is too solid or brittle and breaks off. Check and change the wiper blades every 3 to 6 months to help prevent damage and improve performance.

The wiper blade sizes on Jeep Wranglers are typically 14″ or 15″ on the front and 16″ to 18″ if there’s one in the rear. And the average price to replace the wiper blades is much cheaper than buying a new windshield.

Can Jeep Wrangler soft top windows be replaced?

If you’re looking to replace the soft top windows, you’ll need to order them directly from a dealership. The manufacturer doesn’t sell replacements separately because they are not considered standard used replacement parts. Therefore, it’s best to call your local Jeep dealer for availability and pricing. The average price to replace a Jeep Wrangler Soft Top Window is between $100-$200, depending on where you buy it.

Do the soft top windows come with a warranty?

Yes, they typically come with a limited lifetime warranty, just like the rest of your soft top. If you need to replace it, take it to a Jeep dealership, where they will do all the necessary paperwork and provide full details.

Why do the soft top windows look hazy white or yellow?

The Jeep Wrangler soft top windows are made with a vinyl coating to protect them from the elements. Over time, this finish can yellow or fade, making the windows look hazy white or yellow. This appearance is just oxidation and can look new again with a rubbing compound.

When I was a teenager, I would charge $20 to remove oxidation from vinyl windows on Jeeps and other convertibles with vinyl windows. The process only took about 15 minutes to complete, which wasn’t bad for the amount of money I made. Below are the steps I used to remove the oxidation. If the steps below fail to work, the windows may be too oxidized for repair and require you to buy new ones.

  1. Apply Polishing Compound: It doesn’t matter what brand of rubbing compound you buy; be sure it’s gritty when you rub it between your fingers. Next, apply a small amount to an applicator pad or soft cloth, then coat the inside of the window. Believe it or not, the oxidation is on the inside. Be sure to use light pressure and small circular motions during the application process. Now let it sit for about 2 minutes before moving to the next step.
  2. Remove the Compound: Now, use a dry, soft, and clean cloth to remove the compound. Apply a little pressure and make the same small circular motion during removal. If there are still yellow or hazy sections, repeat step one.
  3. Apply Wax: Now that you’ve removed all the oxidation and restored the clear appearance, it’s time to help keep it that way. To do this, apply a coat of wax to the inside surface, then wipe it off after a few minutes.

Additional Jeep Wrangler Details

I don’t know about you, but this is one vehicle I’ve always been impressed with and love to drive. You can probably tell by the length of this post!

Did you know most Jeep Wrangler accessories were military-inspired? The headlights, tail lights, and grill have all been updated in the past couple of years. The majority of these changes are primarily aesthetic, but there have also been some performance enhancements.

The Wrangler was rugged 20 years ago and still tough today, primarily because Jeep started using high-strength steel in 2006, significantly increasing its rigidity and durability. In addition, the new frame assembly allows for a more significant amount of suspension articulation which increases the overall stability at high speeds.

The current Jeep Wrangler has been in production since 2007 and is offered in sport, unlimited, and Sahara trim levels. Of course, you can also get it with various body styles, including the “Freedom Top,” bikini soft top, or full steel hardtop.

Motor sizes

The motors range from 2.8 to 3.6 L, and the horsepower can vary from 160 to 208, depending on the engine options you select. Each Wrangler has an optional 4-speed automatic transmission along with a six-speed manual.

Towing capacity

Depending on the style you choose, the maximum towing capacity ranges from 1,500 to 5,000 lbs which are strong enough to tow just about anything you want.

Gas mileage

The fuel economy of a Jeep Wrangler isn’t excellent, but it’s good enough to leave money in the bank. The average fuel mileage for the 2.8L engine is 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. T3.6L model gets 16 in the city to 21 on the highway.

Is there an Electric Jeep Wrangler or Hybrid available?

There have been rumors going around for years now that a fully electric version is in the works, but there haven’t been any solid announcements. Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne made headlines in the past, saying he wanted to introduce one by 2022. Of course, this isn’t entirely new news as Jeep has been working on an electric Wrangler along with Fiat Chrysler for years now. If they make it, I will buy it.

As for a hybrid version, most of these rumors started in 2012 when Alfa Romeo CEO Harald Wester mentioned that Jeep would explore the possibility of a hybrid drivetrain, but there’s still no official word on the release date might be. However, in my opinion, a hybrid Jeep Wrangler would be pretty awesome to drive.
