Yes, boat windshields protect you and your crew from outside elements and flying objects while allowing you to see what’s ahead. The windshield isn’t the only glass on a boat but is probably the one replaced the most. Boat glass is typically tempered to help it withstand the rigors of being on a boat for years. Boat glass can also be polycarbonate and acrylate, which are more shatter-resistant. Both of these glass types can be used for windshields and side windows. However, they aren’t as strong as tempered glass. These alternative types of glass are cheaper than tempered and can help you save money.
Windshield replacement cost by boat type and brand
Yachts
There are different brands of Yachts on the market, such as Beneteau, Dufour, and Princess, to name a few. Most Yachts have curved windshields that vary in thickness from the top down. Most are 2 to 3 inches thick and either tempered or laminated. When replacing the glass, we recommend purchasing an entire windshield, not just one layer. This will ensure that your boat will be water-tight. The prices will vary since there’s not a one-size-fits-all situation regarding Yachts.
- Beneteau has a 3″ curved windshield which costs between $350 – $800 to replace. The glass is double-layered and tempered.
- Dufour has a 2″ curved windshield with a cost of $250 – $500 to replace. This glass is also double layered and tempered.
- Princess has a 3″ curved windshield that costs $300 – $600 to replace. This glass is a triple-layered laminated glass with an embedded wire mesh for added strength and safety.
Pontoons
Pontoon boats are the most popular type of boat in America. These boats can be a trailer, pontoon, bowrider, or runabout, and due to their popularity, many more brands are entering the market every year. The glass on a pontoon consists of three panes. One is the outermost layer with a paint/gel coat designed to fill in cracks. The next layer will be an adhesive one, followed by a film on the inside that doesn’t allow moisture to get behind it. The typical cost of replacing the windshield on a pontoon is $200 – $400.
Speed boats
Today’s most popular brands are Starcraft, Ranger, Chaparral, and Ski Supreme. Unfortunately, due to their shape, it’s not uncommon for these windshields to crack. Replacing a speed boat windshield can cost anywhere from $200 – $1000.
Houseboats
These boats have the same type of windshield as a pontoon boat. The glass will consist of three layers, with one on the outside to fill in cracks and give it a new coat of paint/gel coat, an adhesive layer, followed by a film that doesn’t allow moisture to get behind it. Houseboat windshield replacement is also very common and can cost anywhere from $200 – $500.
Bass boat
The windshields in a bass boat are similar to the other boats listed above and typically cost between $200 – $350 to replace.
Sailboats
Most sailboats won’t have a windshield or other glass unless they have sleeping quarters or an inside sitting area. Small side windows typically cost around $250 to replace, while larger ones can cost between $500 – $700.
Are boat windshields the same as automotive glass?
Boat windshields are thicker than car windshields and can withstand more impact from rocks, bugs, etc. But no matter how safe and durable the glass is, it will slowly degrade over time due to weathering and constant exposure to UV rays from the sun.

You can, but it’s best to leave the replacement of boat windshields to a certified professional.
Steps to replace a boat windshield
The following five steps should cover the replacement process on most boat windshields.
- Prepare the area – Prepare to take out the old windshield by cleaning around the outside. Then use a razor blade to cut around the windshield’s perimeter carefully. Be sure to disconnect your speedometer and tilt gauge if applicable before starting.
- Remove the old windshield – Once you finish cutting around the edges, remove the pieces of glass from the inside using a putty knife. If there’s any remaining sealant, remove it with mineral spirits or acetone.
- Clean the glass – Pour some distilled water into a bucket and place your new piece of glass in it. The purpose is to clean out any impurities from the surface, so it bonds properly with the special glue.
- Apply the new windshield – Apply a thin layer of special glue along the perimeter. Press firmly to ensure it sticks well, then put your new piece of glass in place. Be sure to squeeze out any air bubbles.
- Clean up – Remove any leftover sealant with mineral spirits or acetone. Apply your paint protection film as needed and wipe it dry with a lint-free cloth.
Additional parts
Replacing the boat glass may require additional parts such as the speedometer cable/tilt gauge or special holders and cable kits. These will typically come with further instructions, which you can generally purchase from the brand’s website.
Can a boat windshield be repaired?
It depends on the boat, but in most cases, you can repair a crack or break with a special glass sealant or resin. A glass specialist would follow the same windshield repair process used on automobiles.
What’s the best way to clean boat glass?
There are many ways to clean the glass on your boat, but the best method is to use a special cleaner like Permatex Marine Cleaner, which you can purchase at most auto parts stores.
Steps to tint the glass on a boat
While most newer boats come pre-tinted, you may decide to tint the glass on your boat to block out the sun. Tinting is a relatively inexpensive way to add protection from UV rays. However, you must know what you’re doing before attempting this yourself. Below are five steps to help you easily apply tint.
- Prepare the glass – Clean your boat glass with a solution made of three parts water and one part Windex. Then, use a lint-free cloth to wipe away any residue left by the cleaner.
- Measure and cut the tint – The easiest way to do this is to measure the glass with a ruler and then use a razor blade to cut it. You can also wet the glass, place the tint on it, then use a razor to cut it to the exact size. Be sure not to peel the back of the tint and expose the sticky part during this process.
- Apply the tint – Wet the glass with soapy water, then peal the back of the tint to expose the sticky part. Now position the tint on the glass with the sticky side down.
- Smooth out bubbles – Use a squeegee or flat plastic card to remove any air bubbles. Start from the center of the tint and work your way out toward the edge of the glass.
- Clean – Now, you need to clean the glass and new tint with water and a lint-free cloth. Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners on the tint since they can cause the tint to bubble and discolor over time.
