Cost to Replace a Window Regulator

On average, the cost to replace a window regulator is around $500 to $800 for labor and parts. The cost of a repair usually depends on how many doors need replacement, how old your car is, and what type of car you drive (vintage/European versus domestic).

The average cost for labor alone is around $250-$400 per door plus tax. Most mechanics charge between $50-$100 per hour labor charges plus parts. The average time it takes to replace a window regulator is about 3-6 hours, depending on the complexity of the job and the amount of work needed. Generally, if you need to replace all 4 regulators in your car, expect to pay around $600-$800 for labor.

Why Are Window Regulator Replacements So Expensive?

Replacing a window regulator is extremely labor-intensive and requires special tools. A typical repair job entails removing the door panel, disassembling the regulator, installing new parts, and reassembling it back to its proper working order. It is important you get an estimate from a professional before having your regulator replaced.

The hardest part about replacing a window regulator is taking out your vehicle’s door panel. There’s a release button on the inside edge of the front door for easy access to the regulator mechanism on most domestic models. However, most foreign cars have their door panels riveted shut and you’ll need special tools (and training) to complete the job.

What Causes The Power Windows To Stop Working?

There are a number of reasons why you may need to replace your window regulator. However, the most common problem is that the motor has burned out, which could cause a malfunction in the gears or clamps that resist movement. Even if the motor works, it can overheat and cause the plastic housing to melt, which compromises its functionality.

4 Signs The Window Regulator Is Going Bad

  1. You hear a grinding sound while rolling the window up or down.
  2. The window rolls up and down slower than normal.
  3. The window often gets stuck while it’s going up or down.
  4. The window won’t move at all. (This one is a given)

Is The Window Regulator The Same As The Window Motor?

No, there are two different parts, but they work in conjunction together to operate the window. The regulator maintains tension and aligns the window as it opens and closes. It is attached to the door panel with a large spring that keeps constant pressure on the shaft.

The motor assembly moves up and down when you turn your window switch on or off. The motor is attached to the door glass with a set of clamps that hold it in place.

How Much Does It Cost To Fix a Window Motor?

The cost will vary depending on the year and model of your car. The average cost for a window motor replacement is around $110-$500, but it can range from $90 to as high as $700.

3 Steps To Replace A Window Regulator

  1. Remove the door panel. Most domestic models have a release button on the edge of the door, which allows you to pop out the entire panel. Some foreign cars require special tools to remove the door panel.
  2. Detach any wires connected to the regulator and use a pry tool to detach the motor from its housing. Detach the regulator from its shaft and then install the new part.
  3. Reattach all electrical connections, reinstall the door panel and test to see if it works properly.

Can I Replace It Myself?

Replacing a window regulator is not for beginners because you have to be trained to handle something as delicate and dangerous as automotive power windows. Some people choose to tackle a window regulator replacement job with the help of car repair manuals or tutorial videos on YouTube, but the best thing you can do is just bring it to your local auto glass shop or mechanic for an estimate.

5 Steps To Replace The Power Window Motor?

  1. Same as step one in replacing the regulator, remove the door panel on your car.
  2. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the motor in place. Generally, you should be able to detach it with just your hands because they’re usually designed for easy removal.
  3. Detach the electrical connector and remove one of the clips holding the motor in place. If you can’t get it off by hand, use a pry tool or chisel to dislodge it.
  4. Slide out both pieces from their housings and then install your new motor assembly.
  5. Reattach the electrical connectors and all other parts of the assembly, reinstall the door panel and test if your power windows function properly.

In my opinion, if you need to have the motor or regulator replaced the best approach is to take your car to a trusted and trained technician. This will give you the peace of mind that the installation was done correctly and safely, not to mention they should have all the tools needed for this type of job.
